Web Host Review: Gate.com
Today we begin the search. We enter the world of web hosting to find the gate. Are we ready to open the gate, or should we leave it closed? Slowly we begin to creep upon the gate into web hosting. Is the land inside filled with glory, or is it fallen to ruins, left to die like a fly stuck to the tape? As we walk closer, I am ready to open the gate.
Gate.com is a web host providing affordable web hosting solutions. Offering Linux and Windows VPS's, Dedicated Serves, Shared Hosting, and Reseller plans, it seems they have quite a few options open. The most basic plan is the Mach 1 (which comes in either Unix or Windows hosting, respectably) which costs .95 per month, or .95 per year, your choice. Now, being a basic account, one wouldn't expect to much more then the average alloted size and bandwidth, php, Mysql, ect... Well, this Mach 1, even being the basic plan it is comes with a respectable 5 GB of space, and 200 GB of bandwidth. The service allows up to 500 mail boxes, and lets you have unlimited Autoresponders. Now, if you don't know the good of Autoresponders, then I have a feeling that you really should start using Google more often. Looking into the extra features, it shows that Gate.com allows and supplies you with a domain for the first year. That is a pretty good deal, of course, only fi they let you keep it. (more on that later) Some of the other extras include Google AdWords credit, and AddWeb Web Site Promoter 8, the later of the two, I have tried first hand. Nothing great if you don't know how to use it. But this makes me wonder. If they are giving out extras which total a bigger price then the monthly price, how can they afford to give it to you? Couldn't you just hit and run? I am not sure, but it doesn't seem right. So, this makes me wonder if there are catches. Such as having to pay for a years worth of hosting before getting your bonuses. Well, reading the User Agreement, I see nothing but the standard information. You can't make their CPU work to hard, you can't use to much bandwidth, ect, ect. So in a hunt for more information, I hunt down the Knowledge Base of Gate.com and begin my hunt. I find there that they have little bearings on Adult Content, and that they will in fact, automatically charge your credit card on the end of your contracted term. So, don't forget to press that cancel button before you move. Bringing back the subject of the domain, looking in the Knowledge Base, I found interesting information. The subject of the matter is who owns the domain. The Knowledge Base states that Gate.com does not own the domain, but that you do, and that the way they can provide it for per year is because they partnered up with Tucows.
Moving onto the VPS's, Gate.com starts their VPS's at .95 a month, or 9.50 annually. The basic plan supports 25 GB of space, 1,000 GB of Bandwidth, 256 MB of Guaranteed RAM, Unlimited mailboxes, and a maximum of 10 domains/websites. They allow full Administrator level access, and many other features which rival much of the competition out there now.
This web host seems quite worth while and worth a shot, and with accepted payment by United States based checking or savings account, Visa, Master Card, American Express and Discover credit cards, it is accessible by almost anyone. Though the one thing I would like to see would be PayPal support. Though, I couldn't be that lucky.
Well, I think that is as much detail as I need to go into for Gate.com, and I figure you can find out the rest yourself. Thanks for reading, and I hope this article has helped you on your search for the web host that fits you.
