The Abaco Islands comprise a group of small islands in the Bahamas. Though it may be less popular than the Grand Bahama or New Providence Island, Great Abaco Island's wonderful national parks and natural reserves make it just as much as vacation paradise as the more famous islands.

The Abaco National Park spans 20,500 acres of land and the luxuriant vegetation and species of birds will certainly draw many bird lovers to this park. The 5000 acres of land which is covered by pine forests in Abaco National Park is home to many different species of birds including the Bahama Parrot. The park was founded in 1994 primarily to serve as a protective environment for this endangered species. The park, 5,000 of which are covered by the pine forests where the above mentioned bird likes to live.

With such a big land many other species of birds can be found here. Just to name a few - West Indies Woodpecker, more than five different species of Warblers, flycatchers at least four different species, and many different species of doves. With so many species of birds in this area singing and flying above you, it's easy to become aware that it's not only a place for the humans alone, but to other beings as well.

For bird lovers you might want to make a trip to Marsh Harbor. This tranquil resort village is often visited by flocks of loud and colourful tropical birds. Pretty sure you'll not regret coming here. Don't forget to visit the Loyalist Memorial Sculpture Garden, birds are also frequent guests here. So if you are a history buff in addition to a birdwatcher, you are in for a double pleasure. Whether a double pleasure or not your trip to Abaco Islands is a fruitful one.

So much for birds but is there a place for marine life? Come to the Pelican Cays National Park. It is an underwater reserve where you can see many different species of marine life. With its 2,000 acres of land comprising many underground caves, coral reefs, miniature islands and small bays, it is another paradise park not to be missed. The park is beautiful and enjoyable especially for divers since it's more towards marine life.

Besides the above mentioned parks which cover a relatively large area, there are still smaller natural reserves around in Abaco Island. Fowl Cay in Hope Town is a very good example, this park is of particular interest to those who like diving and snorkelling. However, boating tours are also available for charter if you like.

Recent years have seen the Bahamian government taking serious actions in protecting the environment and also making sure the activities offered to the tourists are not harmful to the environment. Thanks to the Bahamian government, not only the prevention of the extinction of some endangered species are very successful but also the enhancement of the eco-friendliness of the tourist industry here as well.

As a result of careful planning and organization from the government, Abaco islands has become a true paradise for visitor.
