Visiting New York City \'The Big Apple\'
One of the most well know cities in the world is New York City. It is known as the "city that never sleeps", and is a good example of a global metropolitan city. New York City is made up of five Boroughs : Manhattan, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.
As most people know, New York City is the largest city in the US, with just over 8 million people in an area of 469 square miles. This earns it the honor of being the most densely populated city in North America, and has the highest mass transit usage in the country. It is a global center for fashion, finance, entertainment and culture, and has a good variety of galleries, museums and other artistic attractions. The United Nations is headquarted in New York City. Also well know are the stock exchanges; the NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange, which are among the most important in the world.
Dubbed the "Big Apple", New York's ethnic diversity is reflected by it's population being made up of 33% foreign born people. Hip Hop enthusiasts may want to visit the Bronx, which is well known for it's roots. Several hip-hop artists grew up in the Bronx which is reflected in their music. If you want to experience firsthand what your favorite artist experienced you can always book a hotel in the Bronx.
If you like the performing industry, be sure to check out Broadway. The thirty nine theaters located in these areas showcase the best and the brightest in the performing arts industry. Only the most excellent plays run for long in Broadway, such as Cats and The Phantom of the Opera. If you have never seen these plays, you really should consider it. Other centers for the arts include Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the New York Philharmonic, and the New York City Ballet. Carnegie Hall is another world-famous performing venue.
A visit to the Madison and Fifth Avenues is an absolute must ff you are an intrepid shopper. You'll find a large concentration of high end stores here ready to serve the financially "well off". For those who are looking for more reasonably priced good Herald Square would make a good choice. If you are a good lover make sure you pay a visit to Union Square. For Collectors, East Village would make a good choice, where rare items can be bought and/or traded. For convenience sake, you might want to consider finding a hotel near these attractions.
