Resveratrol (50%) and Health
Reservatrol is the secret to the wonderful health properties of red wine.
It explains the mystery of the “French Paradox,” --why the French, with their diets high in rich foods and alcohol, two glasses of red wine every day--and cigarettes, do not have a higher incidence of cardiovascular disease.
That red wine, with its nutrient Resveratrol’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, is the answer. Studies have shown that Reservatrol, by keeping the blood vessels open and pliable, prevents blood clots.
It is also said to lower the risk of cancer and heart disease.
More on Resveratrol
Resveratrol not only helps lower cholesterol; it is said to be, in protecting against LDL oxidation that has been linked to cardiovascular disease, more powerful than Vitamin E. And it may, by blocking the action of Cox-2, an enzyme believed to have a part in the development of colon cancer, slow tumor growth
Resveratrol is found in stems, leaves, and the skin of grapes; it is also present in purple grape juice, red or purple grapes, and peanuts.
While red wine has three times as much Reservatol as grape juice, research has shown that non-alcoholic red wine has as much as its alcoholic counterpart because it is the fermentation process that raises the level of Resveratrol in red wine.
There are no reports of toxicity, drug interactions, or side effects from consuming Reservatol, and no information on precautions concerning its use.
There is no RDA (recommended daily allowance) set for Reservatol, but some experts advocate a daily dose of around 30 to 50 mgs.
Our Take on Reservatrol
Resveratrol appears to be a very powerful nutrient and has been shown, according to one US study, to expand the life span of yeast cells by up to 80 percent.
However, further studies are needed to confirm a similar effect on the longevity of humans.
Also, because of the negative side effects and health risks associated with alcohol consumption, we do not believe one should start drinking red wine daily in order to reap the benefits of resveratrol.
Taking resveratrol in a supplement form seems to be a much wiser choice to get its benefits without the damaging negative effects of consuming alcohol.
