Golf: canadian Open Odds
Itís been a long time since 144 golfers actually showed up at a -> PGA Tour event thinking they had a chance to win. This is one of those weeks for the brethren, because Tiger Woods, that mythical higher power, isnít around at the Canadian Open.
Woods has won five events in a row and has the tour in a stranglehold. Though there had been some doubt about who really was the best player in the world when the season started, there is absolutely no doubt now. Woods, once again, is at the top of his game, and everyone else is playing for second.
This week, though, they get to play for first in Hamilton, Ontario. And the Canadian faithful, as usual, have their favorite son ó their only son, really ó to root for.
Mike Weir, the 2003 Masters champion, has been carrying the maple leaf flag for many years. This is a fifth major for him, and the fans know it. And as the Canadian Open rotates its way back to the Hamilton Golf and Country Club for the first time since 2003, you know the love fest will continue.
The previous time the Open came to Hamilton in 2003, it was Weir's first competitive appearance on home soil since his Masters win, and he got the rock star treatment. Flanked by a squadron of police bodyguards, Weir didn't have a moment's peace.
The next year, 2004, the galleries at Glen Abbey were even crazier as Weir contended down the stretch with Vijay Singh and then was beaten in a playoff. It was a crushing defeat not just for Weir but for Canadians who were hoping for one of their own to win for the first time in half a century.
Weir hasnít won since March 2004 at the Nissan in Los Angeles, but heís not far off, either.
His 2005 season was derailed by a nagging neck injury and slow-to-get swing changes, but í06 has been much better. He already won .8 million and is 25th on the money list. He was 11th or better in the Masters, U.S. Open and PGA, and it seems like a win canít be too far away.
Is this the week?
ďIíve been making a lot of cuts and playing some solid golf in a year that has been close to being a fantastic year,íí Weir said earlier this week. ďComing off last year, it has been a decent comeback to where I need to be.íí
The odds on someone who hasnít won in 2 1/2 years should probably be a lot higher than 10 to 1, but thatís where Weir sits right now at WagerWeb.com, which means heíll probably get a lot of interest with your golf bets this week. He is getting there, and taking a shot with him probably isnít a bad idea.
Personally, I like Singh this week for two reasons. One, heís playing very well, despite Sundayís drubbing by Tiger in Boston. Singh shot 61 on Saturday, so you know heís in a groove. Second, with Tiger not around, he wonít play scared like he did last Sunday.
I know heís the favorite this week at 6 to 1, but itís also too obvious to ignore, just like Tiger has been the past two months.
Want some long shots? Stewart Cink at 12 to 1 has been playing well since being added to the U.S. Ryder Cup team, so you can expect big things from him. And Billy Andrade (70 to 1) has been putting together two or three good rounds a week, but never four. He might be a shot in the dark.
Garcia, who has a home near the Swiss course, is the favorite at 4.5 to 1, and heís looking to be at the top of his game with the Ryder Cup just a few weeks away.
Golfís circus act is also in town. Michelle Wie was extended an invitation to play, so sheíll be the second woman after Laura Davies to play in a European Tour event. ďIím honored to be invited,íí Wie said. This is her 11th attempt at competing in a menís event, and sheís never had much luck.
