Immigrant Stories Explaining The Past
Immigrant Stories Explaining The Past A few years back I had the opportunity to serve a service mission for the LDS church in Brazil. I lived in the state of Bahia in Brazil, which lies toward the top of the country towards the equator. Needless to say, it was extremely warm there. The experience for me was phenomenal, giving me the opportunity not only learn the Portuguese language, but also to get a feel for the culture in the area. This portion of Brazil is extremely unique because of the deep beliefs sponsored by the people in this portion of the world. One of my favorite things to do when I was there was sit down at night and watch the people practice capoeira. It is an art to the people in Brazil. It is in a way a type of dance/martial arts which was used not only used as a form of protection, but also as entertainment. In Salvador, they would perform for people who were interested in learning more about the history of the city. In the past, the city of Salvador was heavily involved in Slavery. People were brought in from Africa into very sad times in the country. One of the most popular places to visit in the city of Salvador is called Pelourinho, which is a beautiful part of the city now. The roads are paved with cobblestone and the buildings have been painted in various colors, however in the past this was not always the case. This portion of the city was where auctions where held for slaves. In the area there are many signs of the past left behind for people to remember how the area was during the times when slavery was common. Below this portion of Cidade Alta is a popular market place, under the market is a prison where slaves where held. It is a very sad reminder of the struggles many had to face in those horrible times. Brazil is rich with history; I only had the opportunity to explore the cities throughout the state of Bahia; however in my time there I was able to have many different experiences which helped me understand what the people in that beautiful country had to go through in the past. There were many people who lost their lives and loved ones, just as people in the United States did when we faced the same troubled times. I absolutely fell in love with the country of Brazil. I loved speaking the language and truly enjoyed the company of the wonderful people I was able to meet. The people were extremely friendly; if you wanted a glass of water, anyone was willing to offer. The people would let you into their homes and would speak with you as if you were a friend or family member. Had I not had that opportunity to live in this beautiful part of the world, I may not have ever had the opportunity to hear about the immigrant stories of those who first settled the country of Brazil. I am very happy that I have a small understanding of what people there went through, because it gives meaning to my own life. There may be one immigrant story that may bring happiness and joy to your own life as my experience did for me. If you are interested in learning more about history, or possibly the history of your family members, there are many ways to go about this. I submerged myself in the culture and was exposed to it, but if this is not an opportunity available to you, there are companies who are willing to do the work for you. Price and Associates specializes in assisting in family history research. Good luck and remember to enjoy the lessons you learn through history. It is an excellent chance for you to make your life happier. About the Author: Mike Allen is an Internet Marketing Consultant for 10x Marketing
