What’s on most user’s desktop? A bunch of forgotten icons and a huge wallpaper sitting behind. Do you know your trusty copy of Windows can do more than that? Not surprisingly, many users didn’t notice the Customize Desktop button sitting in the corner in your Display Properties menu. (Right click your desktop, select properties) Well, let me show you how easy it is to set up a webpage of your choice as your background or just as a little box placed in the corner for quick accessibility.
Open up Display Properties if you had not done so. Navigate to the Desktop tab.
Click Customize Desktop…
In the desktop items form which just popped up, click the Web tab, and there you go, you get to display your home page as default. If google.com isn’t your homepage yet, or just can’t bear wasting time opening a new browser to do a search, click the New… button to customize your favorite webpage to be shown on your desktop. Enter www.google.com or just any website you feel like going to. Hit OK and close the dialog box.
Now check the new item you’ve created. However, we’re not done yet. If you want updated contents every time your desktop gets refreshed (yes it can, press F5 on your desktop), select the option you’ve just created, click on the Properties button on the right, and uncheck Make this page available offline.
There, you’re done now. Click OK and close everything.
I had the Google search engine displayed here for quick access to any search I need to perform.
Let’s explore this feature. You may resize or move it just like any other Windows forms. Placing your mouse close to the top reveals a quick menu on the left. Hope it’s clear enough so I need not have to explain. The first icon on the right side, beginning from the left, maximizes the form to fit your desktop. This is similar as wallpaper, but simply dynamic.
If you aren’t fuzzy about the looks, you have the choice of adding as much of these as you want. But it sure does spoil my good looking background.
This new feature does not limit you to display webpages only. The boundaries are undefined; you can expand the functionality by downloading from 3rd parties. Try a search on Active Desktops. You might never know you could watch your favorite video or hook up in an online deathmatch right away!
