Data Recovery
Data Recovery – We are entering a time where everything we do is stored electronically. No longer is the computer being used only for the purpose of word processing. We are spending 8-12 hours a day sitting in from of our Laptops or PC’s. Our email, work projects, tax information, inventory, client information, all stored on the hard drives in those machines.
Hard drives come with warranties just as cars do, why? Because no matter what you do, how well you take care of that equipment, it WILL fail. All hard drive documentation will note a mean time between failures (MTBF.) This is the average time the drive will run BEFORE failing. The problem with this is we have absolutely no way of knowing when the drive will fail, in the middle of a presentation, over night, or the next time you turn your computer on. We also run the risk of losing data through natural disasters, accidents, malicious attacks, viruses, or human error.
A quick search of Google will show you that there are plenty of Data Recovery labs to choose from. Data recovery, laptop data recovery, hard drive data recovery, the search list goes on and so do the companies. Look for a company who offers a free evaluation, if they are going to charge you 0 to look at the drive their recovery costs are likely to be high as well. Ask how long it will take to get an evaluation done before sending the drive in, you should be able to get an evaluation and a quote the same day the hard drive is received. Also consider whether the company will charge for recovery attempts, sometimes a new part is required, hard drives are expensive, especially a hard drive that hasn’t been manufactured in two or more years. Hard Drive manufacturers are constantly changing the parts they use in hard drives, as hard drive sizes increase the parts change. These parts aren’t manufactured for data recovery they are manufactured for hard drives. It is understandable that recovery companies would look for compensation in this event, but there are many excellent companies that offer a “No Data, No Charge” policy which also saves some of the stress that comes with losing data.
Data recovery is not an inexpensive service, and while the data is what is most cherished and valuable to you it is not what you are paying for. Many hours go into sourcing and purchasing parts, repairing/recovering hard drives, and lab time (diagnostics and logical recovery). There is no magic machine that you can run platters through or robotic equipment to do the recovery work for you. Depending on how quickly you require your data there are many companies that offer expedited service which will guarantee your recovery work in a 24-48 hour period. Some companies will even list a starting price on their site or a low to high estimate, compare this closely with the quote you receive.
Remember that not all data recovery companies are created equally, many will boast high success rates but don’t include material to back it up. Look for testimonials or ask about whom else they do business with, returning customers are always a good sign of fair prices and excellent service.
