Vista, Office, Ubuntu-- Of Software Releases and Delays
Microsoft has been talking about launching Vista but recently we’ve been receiving news of the delay of its release. The target release date for Vista is January next year. They said that the delays are because of security issues. They are reported to have a plan to have 2 million testers of Vista next quarter. Aside from the delay of Vista, the Office suite will also be delayed. They will only have a few months in between their respective launches. Ubuntu Dapper Drake will have a six-week delay. The delay will be due to bug fixing, localization work and fine-tuning.
For those who have been waiting for Longhorn, who are now waiting for Vista, some are probably thinking, “Is it worth the wait?” Time and again, I have listened and read through people’s opinions of Microsoft products such as their operating systems and within my circle of friends and colleagues, a lot of them wait a bit longer so that Service Pack 1 will be available. For operating systems, Microsoft Windows hasa big share in the market because of the way that they have established themselves. However, having to postpone its software again - this is going to affect them. Won’t people try to look for alternatives? With the Macbook Pro coming out, there are people who are interested on how it will be. The curious would want to try triple-booting but those who have always wanted to run the Mac OS on an Intel chip would be quite happy.
Users and delayed software
Delayed software releases could make users unhappy. After all, they would be reading all about the developments and the features that Microsoft would like to integrate but they wonder - where is it? Is it really there? Doubt might creep in and leave the users disgruntled. Especially if there has been a record of so many delayed releases that churn out software that is still buggy. Considering the hefty amount to be paid to get licensed copies of software, it’s not good for users to invest in buggy software.
As for Ubuntu, I have seen different reactions about the delayed release but in general, I could sense that there is an acceptance of the delay for improvements on the distro. So far, there has been feedback on forums and IRC that those who are testing it see it as stable. But of course, if you want bells and whistles, you would have to wait a while. So far, Ubuntu is still one of the distributions that release regularly. It hasn’t been straying too far from the release cycle.
