Beyoncé Shakes off the Weight
A recent diet followed by “bootylicious” singer-turned-actress Beyoncé Knowles, raises skepticism among nutritionists and health authorities who worry about what Hollywood is teaching us about leading a healthy lifestyle, and making balanced food choices.
The 25-year old star recently followed a detox-type diet that was created over 30 years ago, in order to slim down for a role in her upcoming film Dreamgirls. The dreamy diva, who is known for her famous curves, all but disappeared when she followed a crash diet that consisted of drinking a bizarre concoction of water mixed with cayenne pepper and maple syrup several times a day.
According to BBC News, demand for maple syrup has skyrocketed since Beyoncé’s weight loss diet hit the entertainment news, which just goes to show the power of celebrity influence. The sales of Mala Bal brand maple syrup, which is a combination of maple and palm tree syrups and costs almost a litre, have increased drastically since the name of the product Beyoncé used was leaked to the public.
In a recent press conference Beyoncé stated “I'm very conscious of being a curvy woman and I'm very happy that I am a curvy woman. I would never recommend it [this diet] to anyone unless you are doing a movie and it's necessary, and you have proper help” she said. "My nutritionist suggested the only way to do that was the [maple syrup] fast. As soon as it was over, I gained the weight back.” she added.
Beyoncé admitted that she was starving the entire time she followed the detox diet and immediately devoured an entire box Krispy Kreme donuts, cupcakes, burgers and fries after the wrap-up of the film. Although she lost an extraordinary 22 pounds in just two weeks while following the maple syrup fast, reminiscent of a déjá vu, she rapidly regained twelve pounds when she resumed to her normal eating habits.
Websites such as DietNation.com provide an informative and truthful examination of some of the top diets on the market today. They provide honest and valuable insight into the pros and cons of each diet.
A survey conducted by the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA), found that 80% of American women are dissatisfied with their appearance. It also tragically revealed that over half of the teenage girls surveyed partook in unhealthy behaviors - such as using laxatives or vomiting to control their weight. The NEDA also reported that over 10 million women are struggling with an eating disorder. Is it any wonder that women feel inadequate with their own ‘normal’ bodies when their role models are scarily-thin and image-obsessed women?
The best way to lose weight is to do so gradually and safely by following a healthy diet and exercising regularly. You should never lose more than two pounds a week. Any diet that suggests otherwise is unsafe and will not lead to permanent weight loss. Before you start any diet, celebrity-endorsed or not, be sure to conduct your own research. And be sure to consult honest, authoritative sources like Dietnation.com, to determine if the diet you crave is really safe!
