Ugh! Answering This Interview Question: Tell Me About Yourself
Ugh! Answering This Interview Question: Tell Me About Yourself
How in the world to answer this question: Tell Me About Yourself! Let me analyze the process from both viewpoints: Yourself and the employer.
You: (What can I say that this emplyer wants to hear? If I say too much about all of my accomplishments it will make me seem arrogant and a know-it-all). I'm lost.
Employer: Help! I don't want to hear about a pedigree from this person. I just want to hear that this candidate can work well with the other employees, get the job done and stay out of my hair!
You: I want to impress this employer that I can do the job. I'll look for a couple of examples about how I have done my work. I want to keep the examples I will tell to about 2 minutes each. Gee, I'll have to tap my memory bank to tell about things I've been proud of. Hey, it might be a good idea to write these out and memorize them so I don't babble all over the place.
Employer: I'll give this person about 2-4 minutes to tell their story, then I have to get back to the abilities and skills necessary to do the job. Headache solved.
You: If the employer DOESN'T ask me this question, my efforts won't be wasted as I can present myself better in my presentations as a job candidate. Heck, all I have to do is be brief, sincere, authentic and smile a lot!
Employer: That "Tell Me About Yourself Question" sounds a trifle out-dated. I think I'll just ask about what the person does well. (I sure hope that relates to the job description) The candidate is already telling me about themselves just by being called in for an interview. I'll just be patient and calm and watch what happens. Job done!
