Nuclear deal could spark job bonanza
A US nuclear company is bidding for lucrative contracts in Cumbria that could result in large numbers of new jobs for the region.
South Carolina-based Washington Group International is currently in the running for deal with the Drigg low-level nuclear waste facility and the Sellafield nuclear plant.
Preston Rahe, Washington president for energy and environment, is in the UK to support the company's bid to assume the operation of the Drigg site.
In an interview with the Whitehaven News, Mr Rahe explained that waste management company Washington hopes to be awarded the tender for the Drigg site and the contract for Sellafield clean-up work when it is announced by the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) next year.
Washington employs more than 24,000 people worldwide, in 30 different countries, and insists that large quantities of new jobs will be created if it is awarded the contracts.
Mr Rahe said: "We couldn't be as successful as we are in the States without community support and we have a very strong commitment to the economic development of the communities in which we operate. One of our aims is to diversify the economy through job creation spin-offs such as establishing manufacturing and nuclear safety business as well as investing in technology."
The Copeland area of Cumbria is the largest single contributor of nuclear capability in Britain and the NDA is talking with candidate firms bidding for the Drigg repository contract this summer.
