Manchester is a city in the Northern England in the old county of Lancashire. Manchester is a big city with its 2.6 million population (over 7 million with suburbs). Nowadays mostly known for its football club – “Manchester United” (by the way, the richest football club in the world) it’s also one of the leading British cultural and industrial centers. The name “Manchester” was mentioned for the first time in X century. The city appeared on the place of the former Celt settlement Mancenion. During Middle Ages Manchester was a commercial and handicraft village. Its rise began in XVIII century with the come of Industrial Revolution. Very rapidly Manchester became the main center of cotton industry. In XIX-XX Manchester was in avant-guard of the labor movement.
Manchester has relatively big number of immigrants. Many poor Chinese moved here looking for their fortune. Some of them find it, some – not, but now Manchester is the second English city (after London) in number of ethnic Chinese.
Now Manchester is trying to get rid of the reputation of the industrial capital and to emphasize its cultural heritage. It has numerous architectural monuments of different styles –Gothic Cathedral built in 1422-1520, Classic-style stock exchange established in 1806-09, neo-gothic town council of 1824-35.
The city also boasts a wide choice of art galleries and museums.
Manchester Art Gallery possesses country's finest collection of pre-Raphaelite art while and its more contemporary section is devoted to British art of the 20th century.
Manchester Museum has British second largest collection of Egypt objects. The biggest one is, of course, in London.
Whitworth Art Gallery was founded in 1899. Special attention should be paid to its Sculpture garden, drawings and prints by British artists and a collection of the national textile and wallpapers including works by William Morris.
Mecca for all football fans, the home arena of the above-mentioned “Manchester United” - Old Trafford stadium - surely should be mentioned among Manchester attractions. The stadium was opened in 1910. During World War II Old Trafford was nearly destroyed, but then fully restored.
The city of Manchester is surrounded by very beautiful landscapes. Traditional cold magnificence of the northern nature smoothens by the mirror-like surface of the lakes and d the greenery of the forests. Lancashire County is divided into two part – one with center in Manchester and the other with the center in Liverpool, no less glorious city.
