Villages of the Vega Baja – Algorfa
Algorfa – Situated between Almoradi and Rojales in the Vega Baja region of the Costa Blanca, Spain is the tiny citrus farming village of Algorfa. Located on the banks of the River Segura, Algorfa lies on rich and fertile land, its surrounding countryside is full of orange and lemon groves. Algorfa enjoys spectacular views both to the mountains and to the azure blue Mediterranean Sea.
From evidence uncovered by an archaeologist of Orihuela in 1903, there seem to have been settlements on the land around Algorfa in about 3,000 BC. The discovery of implements and human remains are an important clue to Algorfa’s first inhabitants.
Algorfa and its municipality was officially founded in 1328 by a privilege granted by Alfonso II after which it became part of the kingdom of Valencia. The original village comprised only fifteen houses with fifteen families. The privilege was withdrawn after the War of Succession in 1714 by Felipe V, but was restored before the end of the 18th Century by Carlos IV.
Village life in modern day Algorfa revolves around the charming village square where throughout the year many fiestas, activities and celebrations take place, continuing the traditions of the past. Also in the village square are the church, the newly built Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) and a selection of bars and restaurants where villagers and visitors can enjoy a peaceful drink and a bite to eat.
Sunshine is the order of the day in Algorfa and its inhabitants can expect to see over 300 days of it during an average year. Rain is scarce and usually limited to the cooler winter months (the most common months for rain being February and November), and an average yearly temperature of about 19 degrees centigrade is normal.
There are a number of attractions worth a visit whilst in and around Algorfa including the quirky neo-gothic church on the road to Benjuzar, built during the 19th Century, the unusual cave dwellings at nearby Rojales now used as a craft market, the lavish gardens of the Palace of the Marquis de Fontabla at Jacarilla and the Natural Park of the salt flats at La Mata with its varied wildlife and marked out walking and cycling routes.
A popular Sunday market is also held in Algorfa where many bargains can be found.
There are a variety of sports and leisure facilities available in and around Algorfa including the La Finca Golf Club – with its championship course set amongst natural surroundings, the recreation centre offering a wide range of facilities and there are some beautiful cycling and walking routes. An excellent range of water sports are enjoyed in the local coastal towns and there is a super Aqua Splash park at nearby Quesada. As well as La Finca Golf Club there are several other golf courses within easy reach of Algorfa, notably along the Orihuela Costa, where there are 3 golf course very close together.
Although Algorfa is an inland village and has no beaches, it is still handily situated for the beaches of the nearby town of Guardamar del Segura. Well worth as it has a very interesting history, Guardamar has some of the finest beaches in the region.

Algorfa can be accessed from the AP-7 motorway (Cartagena – Crevillente) and from the CV-91 between Guardamar del Segura and The historic city of Orihuela. Algorfa is approximately 35 minutes drive from both Murcia and Alicante airports.
