The Well Known Crete
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea. Everything you wished for you can find here: mountain villages, long sandy beaches, rocky bays, beach-bar-boogie and nightlife. There are magnificent mountain ranges, water-sports, tranquil locations and clean swim able seas. Bathed in clear sunlight most of the year, the climate is one of the best in Europe. Crete has an elongated shape - 260 km from west to east and at its widest 60 km, being narrower at certain points, such as in the region close to Ierapetra where it has a width of only 12 km. The coastline is1046 km long borders with the Sea of Crete in the north, the Libyan Sea to the south, the Myrtoon Sea to the west and to the east with the Karpathion Sea. Crete’s mountains are crossing it from West to East, formed by three different groups of mountains: the White Mountains or Lefka Ori (up to 2,452 m high); the Idi range (2,456 m) and the Dikti Mountains (up to 2,148 m high). These mountains gifted Crete with fertile plateaus like Lasithi, Omalos and Nidha, caves like Diktaion and Idaion cave, and gorges like the famous Gorge of Samaria. The magic radiance of Crete is given by the supreme quality of the light here, the sharp rugged mountains meeting openly with clear seas. There is an abundance of wildlife, plants & flowers that are unique to the island. The ever-present scents of wild herbs, the taste fresh fruit, the best of the world’s olive oil and healthy, delicious cheeses are few of the Crete’s attractions. There is a great joy to sip a Greek coffee at the roadside in a mountain village with all the excitement and spillover of weddings and occasions, the history, the people and the world-sourced visitors. It is also a historian's and archaeologist's paradise and Crete’s people make the hospitality and tradition to welcome the visitors. The traditions and culture offered in music, art, food and crafts play a large part in this picture. It combines European ways with the uniquely local. The climate is ideal for most folk, most of the year but the traditional tourist visit period is April to mid-October. Crete offers both developed tourist areas with resort hotels and also quiet coves, hidden beaches and invigorating mountain villages and plateaus that reward the discerning world traveler. The most common places are: Heraklion with the major archaeological museum, smart & trendy cafes and shops and a noisy business bustle; Chania with much of the Venetian part of its history intact. Luxury in Venetian Villas converted to hotels, the ever impressive Venetian Harbour, narrow shop and restaurant-lined pedestrian streets, small hotels contained in buildings that once were home to expatriate merchants and a wide range of places to stay; Rethymno, the old section - the castle and a long sandy beach, cafes and restaurants with local and visiting customers and Sitia ,quieter, though still providing much of interest in its Fortezza, beach, unique cafes and many hotels. Many similar benefits are on offer in Plakias and Ierapetra. Luxury Holidays in Crete
