Don't bet with your heart
I always say, "Don't bet with your heart". That means, if you have a favorite team, don't just blindly put money on them. This is a surefire way to go broke. In my case, my favorite team is the Knicks and I know anytime I wager on them, it's an iffy proposition. So I don't bet on them often, especially when they're up against a good team.
Now betting against your team is even hairier. Do you ever truly want to see your favorite team lose? Well, only if it is prosperous for you.
So last night, the Phoenix Suns were in town, riding a 14-game winning streak and is the hottest team in basketball right now. My Knicks would be without their best player and point guard, Stephon Marbury, and it seemed like they would have a difficult time.
The Knicks put up a solid effort in the first half and led by one after the first quarter. The Suns appeared to be sluggish coming off a big win over the Wizards the night before. Eddy Curry scored 16 points in the opening frame and I thought I could be in trouble. Time and again however, the Suns reminded us just how explosive they can be. The Knicks would go up and the Suns would roar back. Then, the opportunity came and Eddy Curry went out with some type of leg injury. As a Knick fan, I didn't like this, but as a Suns bettor tonight, I loved it. The Knicks went into a prolonged funk and the Suns went on an incredible run. In fact, the Suns went up by 17 in the 4th quarter with about 8 minutes to go. I could almost count my money. But my Knicks, oh my Knicks, they just don't quit. They battled back and eventually lost by 5, completely ruining my cover and my night. If they were going to come back, I would have much rather they won the game.
Steve Nash finished with 22 points and 14 assists as the Suns scored 63 points in the second half after an un-Sunslike 49 in the first two periods. Shawn Marion added 20 points and 10 rebounds, Leandro Barbosa scored 15 points, and Stoudemire grabbed 11 rebounds. 3
