Halloween Havoc In Texas!
The UAB Blazer Football team will be spending Halloween in Dallas, Texas Tuesday night and the scariest creature out on the Football field just may be sensational freshman quarterback Justin Willis of the SMU Mustangs.
The native of Denton, Texas has helped transform a perennial doormat Football program, into a possible bowl participant during the Christmas holidays. America's favorite online sportsbook Sportsbook opened this contest with the home side favored by -2 ½ points, but the sharpies have taken over and driven this line up to as high as -5.
Southern Methodist is 4-4 this season and needs 2 more victories to become bowl eligible, while UAB is 3-5 and a very disappointing 2-5 against the spread. With the gunslinger Willis completing over 70% of his passes for 1273 yards and an incredible 19-3 touchdown to interception rate, SMU is 3-0 at home and has scored 131 points.
These schools have played two common opponents in East Carolina and Marshall, with the latter school as home opponents. SMU handled the Thundering Herd 31-21 as a -6 favorite, while UAB stumbled at home as a -5.5 favorite, losing 31-24. SMU was waxed by East Carolina on the road 38-21, while the Blazers beat the Pirates 17-12 at home in September.
The over/under total on this game is 48.5 and that high number no doubt is due to the Mustangs penchant for scoring a plethora of points at home. The concern I have here is that SMU has not been in the spotlight (ESPN) is a long time and with a freshman quarterback, the fear is that he may play like a deer in the headlights. Its one thing playing on Saturdays, when your game is considered an obscure one, but Tuesday night on National television, changes things considerably.
UAB is coached by Watson Brown and he will enjoy the trip to Dallas, as he will reunite with his brother, Texas Longhorn boss Mack Brown, who may have a nice scouting report on Willis, as he most certainly scouted him in high school.
Incidentally SMU is 7-1 in their last 8 Conference games, while the under is 8-3 in the past 11 UAB games.
