How Bad Will The Eagles Hangover Be?
October 10, 2006 (Philadelphia, PA)- Do you think the fans, players and coaches of the Philadelphia Eagles have managed to get their feet back on the ground, after their magical carpet ride this past weekend? I would imagine there was just a few Philly Steak sandwiches consumed and washed down with a cornucopia of wobbly pops. Now what do they do for an encore? Head to Bourbon Street that’s what!
This Sunday the Eagles will travel down to the Bayou for a date with the surging New Orleans Saints who like the Eagles sport 4-1 records and more importantly, they are both 4-1 against the number. Our favorite online betting shop www.sportsbook.com had the line set at Philly -2.5, but the number has swelled to 3-3.5 this week.
The math nerds who establish these numbers have given both Eagles and Saints bettors food for thought with the field goal point spread and something has to give here. New Orleans is perfect this year in their refurbished Super Dome having defeated Atlanta and Tampa Bay, but you have to go back to December 18th 1989 to locate the last Saints home victory over the Eagles 30-20 as a 1-point underdog.
Having watched the TO-Donovan party on Sunday it was hard to ignore the intensity and them jubilation of usually stoic head coach Andy Reid. This game was made out to be more like a Super Bowl then an early season division game and one must wonder if Philadelphia has open themselves up for a bounce game.
In the horse betting game, handicappers usually look for horses to ‘Bounce’ off an exceptional performance, or a less then stellar one. It is was reported this past weekend that star Eagles back Brian Westbrook and cornerback Lido Sheppard were in rough shape physically. I would assume that these two did what needed to be done to get their ailing bodies on the field and will this sacrifice take it’s toll this weekend.
Remember Saints’ rookie head coach Sean Payton was Cowboys coach Bill Parcells sidekick for several years and will know how to attack the Philly defense. The Eagles will not be going up against a frozen statue like Drew Bledsoe rather a very mobile Drew Brees. On the flip side of this rationale is the fact that New Orleans is also due for a bad game. Everyone in the French Quarter is flying high after Reggie Bush returned a punt for the game winning score Sunday and the NFL is a cruel world, which will bring you back to earth very quickly.
The over/under total that opened at 44 has been getting pounded pretty good by the early betting action and has surged to 46. New Orleans gave up almost 400 yards to a usually anemic Tampa Bay offense that was being led by Bruce Gradkowski in his rookie debut.
Facing McNabb and his 11-1 touchdown to interception ratio is a tall order for leaky Saints defense!
