Skydiving, are you nuts!!!
Skydiving, are you nuts!!!
This is a typical response when someone informs their friends and family that they are ready to try it. I say "ready to try it" because most people contemplate skydiving for months or even years before they attempt it.
In reality skydiving is safe but sometimes it isn't. Skydivers are equipped with a parachute and even a backup chute in case the main chute fails but there is the rare occasion when both chutes fail. It might surprise you that when both chutes fail it doesn't always result in death. Just recently a novice skydiver fell into a parking lot from a few thousand feet and lived. I have heard of a man falling through a roof when his chutes failed and living and others have fallen on snow covered mountains and lived.
The vast majority don't have this problem. They have a safe dive. Many choose to jump in tandem for their first dive. This is when an experienced skydiver straps the novice in the same harness as his and they jump together. The thrill is still there and the novice likes to know they aren't alone. I guess if the jump is unsuccessful it is nice to know you won't die by yourself.
Well, this brings us to the all important question "WHY DO IT". It is for the thrill of it. When you know you are free falling to earth at 9.8 meters squared per second it can release a lot of adrenalin. By the way, I just quoted the speed of gravity. It is true that some do this because they are required to do it but even these people wouldn't allow themselves to be put in this situation if they didn't find the jump fun. I am referring to military skydivers and forest fire fighters that must skydive. People are not ordered to do this. Instead they find the ones that want to be jumpers.
It is common knowledge that skydivers must pack their own chute. This prevents the perfect murder and of course the people think of their families and loved ones just before impact instead of who was the " " that packed my chute. You can choose your own word to put between the parentheses.
In summary; no not everyone that jumps from an airplane is a nut but it does take someone special, or let's say could easily be misconstrued of being nuts, to decide to skydive.
