How to Build your Own Basketball Court
Most people want their own basketball court but don’t know how to build it. Your first and most important step is identifying the area. You need a concrete area but most important it needs to be smooth, firm and ready for play. If the area is uneven you will need to level it out. You can do so by either adding more concrete or by laying artificial basketball surface however, both options are pricy.
Next you need to pick the equipment. Do you want a portable system or an in-ground system? Both options have their pros and cons. Portable systems are good for casual playing. They are easy to install and can be wheeled away when not in use. Portable systems include a base with wheels, backboard, rim and pole.
However, portable systems don’t offer stability like that of the in-ground system. In-ground systems require a pole that is installed into concrete. As you might imagine this can be a time consuming process. First you need to dig up the spot where the pole will be installed. Then the pole is secured into the cement and needs to harden for at least 24 hours.
A third option is a wall-mounted basketball system. The system can be attached to the side of the house, onto the garage or in some cases on the roof. Normally they include a backboard, rim, net and the needed mounting kit. Most come with an arm extension that allows the rim and net to extend forward.
Now you need to check the shapes and sizes of the equipment and pick the one that will best fit your area. For instance the backboard comes in two shapes – regular and fan shaped. If you are planning bank shots then you must go with a rectangular backboard. Also should you buy a basket with fixed rims, or a break away system?
Lastly, you need to mark the court. You can use chalk or paint. Chalk is obviously a temporary marking which means you will have to line it every time you play and that will quickly become tiring. Paint is more of a permanent option but you need to be careful when painting the lines. Hooplines are best but they will add additional cost to your project.
Once you have the boundaries set you are ready to play some ball!
