After winning Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza, Michael Schumacher announced he will quit racing by the end of this season. Schumacher has been with the team Ferrari for around ten years.

Schumacher confessed that age won’t be helping him in the future to win the races since he is already 37 years old and he needs all the energy and motivation to keep the pace, be competitive and outstand among all the other pilots. The pilot prefers to retire now that he is on the top point of his career and not later when his skills start fading.

Schumacher has rewritten the record books and he has won five consecutive titles.

Next season Schumacher’s place will be taken by the Finn Kimi Raikkonen, a 26 year old pilot that currently drives for McLaren and has done so for the last five years.

Raikkonen accepts it will be hard to replace a legend like Schumacher but he trusts in his own ability.

Schumacher admitted he was overwhelmed after informing his team of his decision and having a great finish with such a crowd. It was a very emotional moment for the pilot.

Schumacher revealed that he took the decision to retire after winning at Indianapolis on July 2. Apparently, Schumacher’s decision was made partially by his desire to help his team-mate Felipe Massa, who was in an insecure position due to the imminent arrival of Kimi Raikkonen to the Ferrari team. Schumacher said he made his mind up in July because otherwise "it may take away the future of a very young, talented driver like Felipe".

The Brazilian pilot’s progress in his first season as a Ferrari racer has earned him a one-year contract extension to be Kimmi Raikkonen’s partner next year.

Schumacher’s solid win closed his F1 world championship chase to two points behind current F1 world champion, Fernando Alonso, who retired ten laps from the end with an engine failure. Ferrari took over the constructors' championship by three points ahead of Renault.
