Steelers’ Quarterback Will Miss Opening Game
The Pittsburgh Steelers will have their season’s opener without the quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger led the NFL team to the championship last year.
Roethlisberger underwent an emergency appendectomy on Sunday September 3rd, due to the symptoms he had just before entering to that day’s practice. This situation will make him miss Thursday night’s opening game against the Miami Dolphins. According to the Steelers’ coach Bill Cowher, Roethlisberger’s status for the next games would be reviewed on a week-to-week basis.
Roethlisberger has proved to be a quick healer. This one is the quarterback's third operation in 10 months -- and second in 2 1/2 months. He suffered a mild concussion and a fractured jaw and nose on June 12, when a car cut in front of him while he was riding his motorcycle without wearing a helmet. Later on, he was told he was minutes from death because of bleeding, but he missed no time in training camp and started the Steelers’ first preseason game two months after the accident.
Roethlisberger’s appendectomy was performed laparoscopically, a minimally invasive procedure that involves making several small cuts in the abdomen and inserting a miniature camera and surgical instruments. This procedure speeds healing and patients are usually discharged after 24 to 36 hours and can resume a normal diet soon afterward.
Charlie Batch who is the Pittsburgh Steelers’ backup quarterback will replace Roethlisberger during Thursday night’s game. The Steelers might be getting another experienced quarterback this week since their roster counts only with two of them.
