What are Propane Heaters
Propane heaters use pressurized gas to warm areas that are not very well insulated, such as patios and garages. Propane heaters are often portable and self-contained, meaning they have their own gas supply, so do not need to be hooked in to any outside source of gas or electricity.
Propane heaters come in many types type and size. They are rated, like other heaters, by BTU’s (British Thermal Units), which measures the output of energy. You should select the correct BTU level propane heater for the size of the area you wish to heat. As an example, a small room of about 100 square feet would need 10,000 BTU’s.
Portable propane heaters do not usually require a vent or an electricity supply. They are ignited by a match, or have electric ignition, and attach to a portable propane gas tank or cylinder. They are usually on wheels for ease of moving around.
Some of these types of heaters are tall, with a hood which directs heat downwards. These are usually used on patios or outside for parties or dining. Others are a smaller, box type, sometimes referred to as ‘radiant heaters’. These heaters would primarily be used in garages and workshop type locations. They use the natural flow of air around them.
Yet another type of propane heater is the permanent variety. These usually need to be fixed to a firm surface, like a wall, or the floor, and sometimes require a building permit. Sometimes they have a ‘forced air’ system which distributes the heat, and often the fan, which circulates the warmed air, must be powered by an external electrical supply. These propane heaters sometimes require a vent to an outside wall, because propane uses oxygen to burn, and therefore any enclosed area will need a replaceable supply of oxygen.
All propane heaters come with a cylindrical metal propane tank which holds the supply of propane burned by the heater. The size of the tank will depend upon the size of the heater. All except the largest permanent type of propane heater are usually provided with a small ‘dolly’ or wheels, so that the tank may be refilled easily.
Propane gas is energy efficient. Residential propane heaters used for space heating give off the second lowest emissions of air pollutants, after natural gas. Incredibly, electric heaters are four times higher.
Because propane is perfectly portable, and so clean-burning, not to mention economical and environmentally friendly, propane heaters are used by millions of people nationwide when the thermometer starts to plunge.
