Propane Grill
More and more people are turning to propane as the most economical, cleanest, and least inexpensive option for all their residential and recreational needs. People use propane in many ways, including heating and cooling homes, for water heating, for grilling; a propane grill is far less environmentally damaging than almost any alternative, including charcoal. When used as a home energy source, propane gas offers homeowners more than reliability and cleanliness, propane costs half as much per BTU (British Thermal Unit) as electricity. Approximately 8.1 million American households use propane gas to fuel their home-heating systems. Because propane is portable and clean-burning, it is used by millions of recreation vehicle owners everywhere. Gas grills are increasing in popularity, but propane also is used for outdoor lights and generators. And did you know that all your RV appliances can be run from clean, efficient and economical propane gas? The Barbecue Institute of America states that more than 80 million American families have bought a propane barbeque grill. More than half these also own a gas grill. Gas grills are becoming increasingly popular because they are easier and quicker to use, and much easier when it comes to cleanup. Southern California has already banned the use of charcoal lighter fluid because of the environmental problems created by both charcoal and the lighter fluid. There seems little doubt that other states will eventually follow their lead. Propane fuelled gas grills are being sold at a record rate for outdoor home cooking. Sales have overtaken those of charcoal, electric, and natural gas. When buying your gas grill, look for one that offers at least two heat settings. Side tables are also highly beneficial, some cooks would say essential. The better gas grills have a built in gas gauge and thermometer and an easy to empty drip pan. Some offer a rotisserie attachment, others do not. Whichever type of gas grill you use for your cookouts, make sure that you open the lid before you start the flow of gas. Not to do this would cause a build up of gas, which could lead to an explosion. When you use your grill outdoors, always do so in a well ventilated area. Before you light the grill, ensure that the controls are set to the ‘off’ position. It is also advisable to store you propane cylinders in an upright position and outdoors. The average grill uses about one pound of propane gas for every half hour of cooking time. To determine how much gas is left in the tank you can pour hot (not boiling) water over a section of the side of the tank, and then run your hand up and down the side. The part of the tank which turns warm is empty --- the part which feels cool is full. Of course, if you use your propane grill regularly, then it is wise to always keep a spare cylinder available.
