Job Time Tracking with GPS
A 2005 Salary.com and AOL study says the average employee wastes 2.09 hours a day on everything from conducting personal business to running errands, arriving late or leaving early and making personal phone calls.
When you’re an owner of a service-oriented company such as plumbing, HVAC or electrical, wasted employee time can cost you hundreds of dollars per day.
“Historically, service-related companies have had trouble accounting for their employees’ actual time on the job,” says John Eller, president of Maryland-based Insight USA.
Adding fuel to the fire are the customers who complain that they’re being charged for a certain number of billable hours when the service technician wasn’t there that long. These customers have an advantage over employers who cannot prove how long their technicians were actually at the job site.
As an expert in vehicle tracking technology for businesses, Eller says GPS tracking technology is a viable solution for service-oriented business in need of a job time tracking.
“A GPS Tracking System supports good employees,” says Eller, “while identifying individuals who may be wasting valuable company time".
Different than a mobile communications or navigation system, companies are harnessing GPS tracking technology to tell them how long their employees and vehicles have been at a specific location, what direction they're heading and how fast they're moving. Workers are expected to use GPS-equipped systems to clock in away from the office, and log the time spent and activities performed at each stop along the way.
“This brings accountability to the mobile workforce as if they were in the office”, says Eller. Specifically, these systems solve the following problems:
Questionable Customer Complaints—Business owners can confirm billable hours by location and break down employee time expended, thereby being able to support employees’ time records during a customer complaint.
Inaccurate Payroll Hours—Payroll departments can confirm the number of hours the entire mobile workforce worked and assure the mobile workforce adhered to assigned schedules.
Inefficient Use of Company Time—By seeing all aspects of vehicle activity during a specific time period, business owners get an in-depth overview of company vehicle usage.
Unauthorized Vehicle Use—Business owners can see when their service vehicles enter or leave a zone in real-time and get a detailed report on the vehicle’s use, when it was parked, where it went and how long it was used.
While tracking employee time can cause a rift in the employer-employee relationship in the short term, this solution presents long-term benefits for both business owners and workers alike.
