When Harry Houdini performed his greatest escape he was hanging upside down in a glass-fronted box that was filled with water. The escape played on the audiences' fears of being trapped and drowning. It created a sensation. It also happened to be one of the safest escapes he ever performed.
Part of his genius that the audience never saw was the careful safety features that were designed into his escapes. He was a dare devil but he didn't take any unnecessary risks. In terms of the Water Torture Cell there were two safety values at the bottom of within easy reach. They also had handles on the outside that could be used by his assistants who were standing by. The fact that they also had a fireman's at the ready was just to add to the drama. It worked.
Whatever you are attempting in life and business there will always be an element of risk in any worthwhile endeavour. Think about what you might be willing to attempt if you had a 'safety net' in place. You don't need to put yourself in unnecessary danger just figure out what your back up plan needs to be in order to make best use of your talents.
In The Houdini Principle we explore how you can use your strengths to much greater advantage. You don't need to step out of your comfort zone in order to develop and do more with what you've got. You just have to start thinking more creatively. We use principles from the design of Houdini's remarkable stage escapes in a unique and novel way.
The Chinese Water Torture Cell was the result of Houdini's continuous development, a combination of the elements from his previous escapes and a showcase for his strengths. Houdini regarded the Chinese Water Torture Cell as the 'climax of all my studies and labours.'
What would it be like if you had a strategy that allowed you to make best use of your talents, develop your strengths and create your own challenges, and do it all with a sense of ease and adventure.
