Is it Possible to Think Yourself Rich?
There has been a lot of buzz lately about the power of thought. The movie The Secret has spread like wildfire causing shows like Larry King Live, The Ellen Degeneres Show, ABC News online, and Oprah to air shows covering the subject. There have been a number of studies showing a direct link between positive thoughts and healing. It would make sense that positive thinking can also affect other areas of life.
The premise is what you focus on becomes your reality. This comes into play whether you want what you’re focusing on or not. The theory is that every thing is made up of energy, even our thoughts, like sound waves they are there but we can’t see them. Whatever your predominant thoughts are they build in force, like sound getting louder and louder, this energy matches up with similar energy and becomes what shows up in your life. You can see evidence of this when you watch someone preoccupied with something, say forgetting their lines in a speech, when they get up to give the speech the words fly out of their head. Sometimes what you think your focusing on is really just the opposite. Mary wants more money, every day she thinks: I want more money so I can pay off my debts. I have so much debt. I wish I didn’t have so much debt. How did I get into debt so far? I really need more money. What is really the predominant thought?
It seems simple sit on the couch thinking about what you want and Presto Magico it will appear. With over 50,000 thoughts flowing through your mind each day monitoring them could be a full time job. To make this really work for you there needs to be a mix of thoughts and actions. The positive thoughts combine with the action to produce results. In the speech example if you never get up and deliver the speech you couldn’t forget your lines. Add to the mix our beliefs based on past experiences and it can take some time to learn new behaviors. The beauty of this is flow that occurs, less struggle, less frustration, and more ease in what you’re doing.
For those that are skeptical suspend disbelief for 30 days and try this. Think about rainbows, every day for a minute or so four or five times during the day imagine a rainbow. Notice how many rainbows you see, they may be live, photos, drawings, simply notice how many more you see. Next try it with a parking space, same process simply imagine a great parking space. The clearer you are about what you want the stronger the energy. What you’re doing is lining up the energy, laying the ground work so to speak. When you do that it’s easier to recognize and act on opportunities coming your way. Life has more of a flow, an ease about it rather than the struggle and frustration we all seem to embrace.
There are some who worry that this is advocating the ostrich effect: sticking your head in the ground and not looking at what you don’t like simply ignore it and it goes away, far from it. We all have choices, sometimes we don’t like the choices we have, but still the same they are there. Choosing what to focus on is a conscious decision to move towards what you want. Acknowledge what you don’t like, and use it to clarify what you do want. It seems a wise choice to think the positive, not dwell on the negative.
So can you think yourself rich? Well, if you focus on what you want and take inspired actions, yes I think you can. At any rate what do you have to lose?
