Setting Personal Goals
Regardless of what we are, what we do or what we aspire to become one of the most effective ways to achieve success is by setting personal goals. By using goals to the highest extent of their power, we take control of our life and give it a direction.
When we think about setting personal goals it's easy to quickly allow the big things to come to mind. Things like, 'I want to be a millionaire.' Or, 'I want the biggest house in time.' Or, 'I want to be the most successful this, that or the other.' These are great goals and they are excellent goals to aspire to.
However, large goals such as those in the previous paragraph are long-term goals and require multiple steps and often years to reach. By setting only large goals it is easy to become distracted from them, lose interest and quickly start feeling dejected and that we never succeed in anything.
To overcome this and keep moving forward towards our long term and larger goals, we need to set personal goals that are much easier to attain in a shorter amount of time.
What works great for this is to set your larger goal, be sure it's something you really want to reach. Now, sit down with a pad of paper and a pen. Start scratching out every single step you need to take to in order to achieve this goal. These steps can be as encompassing as you desire just as long as they are crucial points to achieving the larger aim.
After you've made this list, simply get busy working on the first step. Complete and move on to the next one. By setting these smaller goals, completing them and being able to move on to the next level we are setting into our minds that we can accomplish things and that we can do what we set out to do.
For example, let's use the 'I want to make a million dollars'. The first step to that would be to make the first dollar; the next step would be ten dollars and then a hundred. After a hundred, we need to make a thousand and then ten thousand and then a hundred thousand, all the way until one million.
In fact, you can even break your small personal goals down into even smaller goals. However small you need to set your goals to accomplish them in a timeframe that doesn't allow you to become dejected, that's how small you need to go.
Setting smaller personal goals and reaching them builds our self-confidence and increases our self-esteem. With this increase in confidence and esteem each goal we come to will be easier to accomplish and continue to build our feeling of self worth. By progressively stepping up our smaller goals, we will soon find that we've accomplished the large goal.
