Teaching your Ferret not to Bite
Teaching your Ferret not to Bite By Kevin Gawricki
As you know teaching any pet not to bite is an important step. Ferrets actually really do not bite but, nip. This action is actually the way ferrets interact with each other and their skin is thicker than ours and, they do not realize that when they nip at us it hurts.
Below are some common ways to help stop your Ferret from nipping. Try each and find out what works best for you and your Ferret.
Bitter Apple:
Can be sprayed on hands and fingers to deter biting. Remember never to spray directly in your ferret’s face.
Ferretone:
Can also be applied to hands (or where needed) and will cause your Ferret to lick instead of biting.
Toys:
When Ferret starts to nip offer a toy instead so he or she will nip at that instead of your hands or ankles.
Scruffing:
This is most common technique. Grasp ferret by loser skin behind back of neck, lift ferret to eye level, gently hold mouth close with index finger and thumb, and say “no” loudly and firmly.
