The History of World Cup Football
The World Cup Football has a long history of more than 125 Years. England and Scotland played the first International Football Match in the year 1872. But during that time the Sport was rarely played outside Great Britain. The popularity of Foot Ball started growing increasingly. Football match was played as a demonstration sport.
During the 1900, 1904 and 1906 it was played as summer Olympics. Till the year 1908 Football was played as Summer Olympics without any Medal presentation. This event was at first played by Amateurs which was organized by England's Football Association. It was a show in the beginning rather than a Competition.
This Olympic event continued to be a contest between Amateur Teams. Sir Thomas Lipton organized the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy Tournament in Turin in 1909 between the prestigious professional clubs of Italy, Germany and Switzerland. This Competition was often described as the first World Cup.
West Auckland an amateur side from North-east England had won the first Tournament. This team was invited after the Football Association refused to be associated with the Competition. In the year 1911 West Auckland returned to England and successfully defended their Title. As per the rules of the Competition the Trophy was given to West Auckland to keep it with them for ever.
The Olympic Tournament was recognized as a “World Football Championship for Amateurs” in the year 1914 by FIFA. Then it took the responsibility to organize the event. The Summer Olympics which was held in the year 1924 was the World’s first intercontinental foot ball Competition.
Uruguay won the Tournament. Again it won the Gold Medal in the year 1928 with another South American Team, Argentina which took the Silver Medal. FIFA decided to stage its own International Tournament in the year 1928. Uruguay who were the two-time official Football World Champions and who were celebrating their Centenary of independence in 1930 became the host country for the Tournament held that year which was decided by FIFA.
Popularity of Football was not so good in United States so the Summer Olympics in the year 1932 held in Los Angeles did not plan to include Football as a part of the program. The status of Amateur players was disagreed by FIFA and the IOC so Football was dropped from the Games.
This made Jules Rimet the FIFA president to organize the inaugural of the World Cup Tournament held in Uruguay in 1930. The Nations who participate in the Tournament were invited by the President of FIFA. But the venue Uruguay was too far for many Countries so the Match was held between Belgium, France, Romania and Yugoslavia.
