Paper Dolls – Making a Comeback, With a New Twist
Some older people may have fond memories of playing with paper dolls when they were young children. Young girls and boys alike, in years past, delighted in cutting out the figures, and then dressing them in different clothing and putting them in different settings. With the advance of more technological toys, however, paper dolls seemed to fall by the wayside for a while. It is this same technology, however, that is helping paper dolls to make a comeback as something that children once again enjoy playing with.
If you have a computer and Internet service, you can download and print, or just print, paper dolls and paper doll accessories from certain websites. This in and of itself has made paper dolls much more fascinating for children. Instead of browsing through toy stores and looking through the limited amount of paper dolls that they have available, now children can browse through several websites and choose from hundreds of paper dolls, with figures being all different nationalities, all different ethnicities, and even figures that resemble well known celebrities. Some of these paper doll websites offer figures and clothing for these figures that are so artistic and so elaborately detailed that it can more easily be called “paper doll art”, and often is.
One great place to check out if you are interested in some amazing paper doll art for your children (or possibly for yourself) is www.paperdollreview.com. This website is run by OPDAG, which stands for The Original Paper Dolls Artists Guild. Although you don’t download paper dolls and paper doll clothing from this website, they do list several paper doll books that you can order directly from their website, and the variety of paper doll books that you can buy from them is astounding. Once your children (or you) get started collecting these paper doll books, it will be hard to stop.
A great place to go to find paper dolls to print from the Internet is www.paperdolls.org. Though the person who runs this website sells paper dolls, she periodically offers paper dolls for printing right from her site. She also has a link where you can check through her archives, where you will find many other paper dolls that she offers for free printing.
A search on the Internet for paper doll websites should bring up a lot of results, with most websites charging a small fee for the privilege of downloading and/or printing their paper doll patterns.
