What gifts to buy your bridal party
In keeping with wedding tradition, the bride and groom give gifts to their bridal party to say thank you for their involvement in the celebrations. These gifts are then presented to the party at the wedding reception. But, who do you have to buy for and what do you buy?
Well, gifts are usually purchased for the parents of the bride and groom, the best man, bridesmaids, ushers, pageboys and anyone else who has had a significant input to your special day. Generally speaking these are bought and paid for by the groom!
Of course, each society and culture handles their gift giving differently and your decision should be your own and dependent upon your own preferences, religious and cultural beliefs.
When it comes to giving gifts to the children, it’s always nice to give them something special to keep however, little ones are generally more appreciative of something edible. Many brides choose to give children [young bridesmaids, flowergirls, page boys, ring bearers etc] something nice to eat or a small toy to play with on the day, and then a small keepsake of the day. This may be in the form of an engraved box, a piece of jewellery, a personalised photo album, a personalised teddy or special book.
With older bridesmaids, jewellery is again a suitable choice or perhaps an engraved box in which to keep jewellery. More traditional brides will choose jewellery where more modern couples give bridesmaids engraved compact mirrors, lipstick cases or an engraved glass gift. There is no structured protocol with these items although it is a generally held belief that brides should give some sort of keepsake as a memento of the day.
Male bridal party gifts are sometimes more difficult depending on the age of the man in question. Again, silverware is a usual choice whether this is a personalised tankard, a silver hipflask, a bottle stopper or a boxed set of cufflinks. Some brides will give a best man or usher an engraved pen, a personalised paperweight or even a personalised chocolate plaque.
When it comes to the parents, many brides choose gifts for the couple as a unit. For example, an engraved photo frame or glass vase is an ever-popular choice. Sometimes this is difficult, especially if parents are divorced, widowed or remarried. Of course, this will need to be considered when a gift is selected and there is no reason why you couldn’t choose separate gifts for each individual. If silverware or glassware is not suitable, a hand tied bouquet of flowers and a respectably sized box of chocolates always go down a treat!
Whatever you choose, remember that it does not have to be a lavish extravagance but a small well-chosen token to thank everyone for being fundamental to a happy and successful day.
