The Volvo S40 T5: Joining the Luxury Compact Sedan Class
The company whose name is synonymous with car safety, Volvo, has been in the automotive industry for 80 years now and through its long history have given high performance vehicles to the public and to the industry. Their vehicles not only perform well but also look good both inside and out. The reason for this is the company’s loyalty to its Scandinavian heritage, their design concept have been accepted approvingly by the public. Add to the performance and aesthetic value of their car the company’s drive for safe cars and you will no doubt have a bestseller in your hands. The manufacturer’s legacy of producing such cars continues with their compact sedan which is the Volvo S40 T5.
The T denotes that this car sports a turbocharged engine, and this is a trim package of the Volvo S40 series. The powerplant employed by the sedan is a 2.5-liter double overhead cam five-cylinder in-line engine with an output of 218 horsepower maximum and 236 lb-ft of torque. It is coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission which facilitates smooth transition of power to the wheels at different gear ratios. To keep this engine from overheating, its cooling system parts are precision engineered like the Volvo fan clutch and the fan itself which works perfectly together to keep the engine at its normal operating temperature.
The car is configured to be an all-wheel drive which makes it more stable and work efficiently on all weather condition. To further increase the stability of the car and give the car’s occupants a smooth ride, the chassis is designed to have fully-independent MacPherson strut suspension system in the front and a multi-link rear suspension. To get the best of the car’s suspension system, a Dynamic Sport Suspension is integrated to finely tune all the suspension components. The design of the chassis also reduces noise produced by the engine thus increasing the comfort of the occupants of the car.
Since the car is a Volvo, safety features are abundant as a testament to the company’s safety-first attitude towards their mass produced vehicles. The car carries all the standard Volvo safety systems to protect the occupants in case of front and side collisions. The body of the car is designed with safety in mind, using the company’s design engine called VIVA or the Volvo Intelligent Vehicle Architecture which resulted to the usage of four different grades of steel on different zones in the car depending on their functions and their reaction to collisions. The system allows the production of cars that will exhibit controlled deformation during collision thus increasing the chance of the car’s occupants to walk away from a crash safely.
