New Vs. Used? The Dirty Secrets that New Car Dealers Don’t Want You To Know
As car manufacturers continue to produce more technologically advanced and reliable cars, is there a reason for car buyers to go out and purchase a new vehicle verses a used vehicle? Think about it, there was a time when everyone would purchase a car, drive it for a year or two, and then trade it in for the newer, more up to date model. This was because within two years car technology was much better than it was the year before. People wanted the advancements in reliability and safety that the same model two years ago did not have. So in this day and age, should you buy a new vehicle or should you go look in that used car lot.
One of the biggest things that occur when you purchase a car, whether it is used or new is the depreciation of the value of the car. If you were to drive a car off of a lot and then return to the same dealer 6 months later thinking that you could recoup 90 percent of what you paid for the car, think again. If you are looking for value then finding a bargain in used cars can be very pleasing and financially rewarding. Most people are of the belief that the purchase of a used car is a risky endeavor because the car will end up with problem after problem. However, it is important to keep in mind that with the technology of modern cars within the past five or so years, cars are a lot more reliable and have less maintenance issues then before.
Another plus for purchasing a used vehicle is that the impending loss of value of the vehicle is much less because the car has had several owners. So the depreciation value is therefore much less because there comes a point when this depreciation begins to level out. In other words, if you purchase a used vehicle for say 10,000 dollars and it is in good condition and has had one other owner, it is likely that when you drive it off of the lot that it will not depreciate or the percentage of depreciation is miniscule.
This is not to say that you should not consider a new car at all. With a new car, you can have the reassurance that none else has driven your car. There is no hidden past. You can also customize your new vehicle anyway you like which is much harder on a used vehicle. And besides, who doesn’t like that new car smell.
There are benefits to purchasing either a new or a used car. You need to make sure that you look at all of your options. Keep in mind that cars today do last much longer and are much more reliable and durable then they used to be. Also keep in mind that as technology continues to improve, so will the cost of a new car. It is definitely a good idea to look at the options of both a new and used vehicle.
