2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Debuts at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show
Mitsubishi has unveiled its 2008 Lancer in a theatrical style at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. The all-new 2008 Lancer is a compact sport sedan designed to deliver dynamics, high value, advanced safety features and cutting edge user technology in an aggressively styled package. The new generation Lancer models are scheduled to arrive in Mitsubishi dealerships in early 2007.
The 2008 Lancer is based on a new performance-engineered global platform that also forms the foundation of the all-new Mitsubishi Outlander SUV and will highlight the next-generation high performance Lancer Evolution model. 2008 Lancer aside from its high quality Mitsubishi parts are equipped with a comprehensive safety package that offers seven standard air bags, including the first driver’s knee air bag in Mitsubishi model.
The 2008 Lancer will be powered by a new 2.0 liter DOHC MIVEC 4 cylinder engine which is among the most powerful standard engines in its segment with 152 hp at 6,000 rpm and 146 lb-ft of powerful torque at 4, 250 rpm that conforms to Federal Tier 2, Bin 5 emission regulations.
The 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer is offered in three trims and driving dynamics namely: DE, ES and the sport tuned GTS. The ES model has a more refined appearance with 5-spoke 16 inch alloy wheels, color keyed door handles and mirrors with a chrome grille surround. The GTS has a more aggressive appearance compared to the other Lancer models with its 10-spoke 18 inch alloy wheels, front and side air dams, standard fog lights, a rear spoiler and a chrome tailpipe tip.
The new generation Lancer is going to be the first Mitsubishi in North America to offer CVT or continuously variable transmission in place of a conventional automatic transmission. With the CVT the Lancer GTS will exclusively feature a 6-step Sportronic® that will enable the driver to manually take control of the transmission operation through the use of magnesium steering wheel paddle shifters which is also a first in the segment.
The difference of the CVT from conventional automatic transmission is that it operates on a pulley system that allows an infinite variability between the highest and lowest available ratios without discrete steps or shifts unlike the conventional automatic transmission that uses fixed gear ratios. Mitsubishi has designed the 2008 Lancer with great focus on reduced operating costs, increased reliability and durability. It makes used of replaceable crush boxes for the front side members which reduces repair costs caused by light collisions.
