Red Light Camera Controversy Result in New Inventions
Red light cameras or traffic cameras are a growth industry and being installed at a fast pace in cities throughout the world. Red light cameras are usually found at intersections and take a picture of vehicles that are within the aim of the camera when the light signal turns red. The license plate in the photo is traced. The owner of the car receives a ticket in the mail with a hefty fine.
A red light camera is controversial because of various issues.
These issues concerning the traffic camera include:
1) a red light camera is about revenue for the government – safety is not the priority
2) red light cameras may prevent accidents but rear end accidents have increased
3) a red light camera is mechanical and is notorious for making mistakes
4) private companies that make red light cameras are benefiting from law enforcement agencies and our tax dollars
Revenue from red light camera fines has totaled over one billion dollars. This is the tip of the iceberg. Red light cameras have been slowly adopted and installed in the past. Now, the law enforcement officials and local governments are realizing the income potential of these red light cameras. These red light cameras are working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
It’s true that red light cameras have helped to reduce the side impact accidents associated with running red lights. However, another form of accidents has increased. These accidents are rear end impacts.
Red light cameras are mechanical and do make mistakes. Yes, these traffic cameras are not perfect. Mistakes are made and you can fight your ticket and have the fine waived. But you have to take the time out of your busy life and go through all the steps to fight the ticket.
The private companies are also benefiting from these red light cameras. They have convinced governments in cities throughout the world that this is a good idea and it turns out that it is a good idea. These private companies are realizing hefty profits from brisk sales. These sales are the results of your tax money.
There is a saying that “necessity is the mother of invention.” There is definitely a need to foil these red light cameras. Several companies have developed and introduced products into the marketplace designed for red light camera defense.
The two most popular products are license plate covers and sprays. The license covers are plastic sheets that are mounted over the plates. These covers diffuse the letters and numbers of the plates at extreme angles. A red light camera is usually mounted above traffic level. At that height, the red light camera only takes a picture of a cloudy image from the license plate of the vehicle.
The other product designed for red light camera defense is a license plate spray. This product is sprayed onto the license plate. The numbers and letters appear normal to the naked eye. However, when the red light camera takes a picture, the flash from the camera actually reflects off of the plate and a white glare reflection makes the picture unreadable.
Red light camera issues are definitely becoming a much discussed topic. Whether the new product meant to thwart red light cameras is ethical will probably be an issue that will need to be settled by the courts. It is no doubt that drivers will be more aware and cautious when entering an intersection. Maybe that is the whole purpose of the red light cameras.
