Ridesharing in India is still in its infancy but if achieved, mission ‘Carpool India’ can promise a positive future for the next generations. Carpool in India is full of potential with agencies dealing with car rental in India already predicting windfall in the trade. Car sharing in India means an intelligent option. ‘Intelligent’, because there is no point if five individuals are going to the same place at same time and coming back home also at the same time, in five different cars. And if those individuals happen to be neighbors, such a practice is criminal. These five people can do a simple thing that will benefit everyone immensely. Just decide to share the car ride, i.e., they can alternate between their cars and this way only one car is required to take, to and from the work place, the five people. At an individual level, these people will be spared of the extra fuel expenditure as well as the stress-related tensions associated with driving in the maddening rush on the Indian roads. That’s why carpools in Delhi and carpools in Mumbai are considered all the more ‘intelligent’ purely due to the heavy traffic volume in these metropolitan cities. At the community level, these people will be enhancing their camaraderie by trusting each other. The spirit of brotherhood and common purpose develops the overall personality of these individuals. At the macro level, these people will be doing a great social service by car sharing. One car instead of five means lesser traffic on roads. Lesser cars mean lower levels of road congestion, which obviously means faster travel on the busy roads. Lesser cars also mean lower levels of pollution on the Indian roads. Lower pollution means healthy India! The benefits of Indian carpool bandwagon are immense. The need is just to realize them and adopt the new age traffic solutions.
