The Right Mind-Set of a Web Marketer
When you speak about marketing on the web, mostly, you are talking about changes. Discussions that fall under web marketing, like tips, how-tos, techniques and strategies are all temporary. I have came to realized this after I have read Dr. Wilson’s Five Mutable Laws of Web Marketing.
In his article, he humbly stated:
“This is embarrassing. Al Ries and Jack Trout have their "22 Immutable Laws of Marketing" (HarperBusiness, 1994), and what do I offer? Five measly laws, and mine are mutable, flexible, still growing and changing.”
Well, they are little, alright. Only five laws and still, all are only temporary. But marketing still differs from online marketing. I have tried to measure the feasibility between permanence and change in the online environment, specifically when we deal about Web Marketing. What I could think of is when you apply a fixed rule online, we are like going on the opposite direction right towards to nowhere. What I mean is, when we set our thinking to only doing the things that we are accustomed to, then we are also likely to remain on the same situation.
In Web Marketing nothing is permanent except change itself. This is very paradoxical in a sense, but that is how things go around on the Internet. So how do you get to deal with these changes? The answer: adaptation. When there are changes on the Internet do not barricade yourself with standardized rules. Restraining yourself with such attitude will result to less opportunity to excel, and worse, be totally forgotten online.
Being a web marketer, you should also have the attitude that suits the kind of work you are doing. I am not setting up “rules” here. However, just consider the tips below as a form of advice, which you could freely rely on in times when you seem to doubt yourself in accepting any changes online:
In Web Marketing, rules should be treated as “guidelines” and not as a one-way policy.
I have said earlier that there is still a big difference when it comes to marketing and online marketing. However, there are also other concepts that are very applicable to both offline and online marketing. Sometimes, the “changing rules” in web marketing have its basis on the offline marketing ideas. We all need some foundation to start with. However, it does not necessary mean that we should stick to these foundation. The point is, in Web Marketing, you have to keep up with changes. And part of these changes is the continually evolving rules about Web Marketing. Web Marketing rules are your tracks in keeping up with what is still acceptable or not online. If you are going to abide by them, you are restraining yourself to stepping into other opportunities and greater success.
As a marketer, you should be sensitive enough to know which ones still work and which ones don’t.
Well this is not absolutely a process of “trusting your intuition”, but also you should become observant to the ongoing changes, especially a change where the strategies, techniques and the likes are no more working on your site. Yes, consider your situation amidst these changes on the online environment. When accepting and choosing which ones have to stay, which ones have to go, and which ones are accepted, you should try to filter only the things that may well suit your site’s condition. Try to remember that not all latest tactics and marketing trends go well with every site.
Above all, in Web Marketing, changes are inevitable. Thus, be open to all these changes.
As a web marketer, you should learn to become open-minded to whatever change that may occur. Even though change may sometimes become hard to accept, still, having your ears, eyes, and mind open to this fact will not hurt a bit. The Internet environment is full of open ideas and every minute of it is spend with how things may help “change” the online activity better. Thus, you have to become as vibrant as the others who are looking forward to changes that may result in a more efficient online environment.
