Every Halloween since 1927 a séance has been conducted to try to contact the great magician and escape artist Harry Houdini.
Harry Houdini was one of the most famous men alive in his lifetime and the highest paid performer of his era. He is considered to be one of the greatest showmen that ever lived and his marketing genius has ensured that his name lives on today.
He couldn't have picked a more suitable day to die. After being taken to hospital and operated on for appendicitis on October 22nd 1926, his doctors realised the seriousness of his condition. They gave him at most 48 hours to live. However, Houdini was extremely fit for his age and he clung on until October 31st. At 1.26pm he told his brother Hardeen, "I can't fight this any longer." Perhaps he realised he didn't need to.
Harry Houdini, Master Showman and man of mystery died on Halloween.
He had already made a pact with his wife that whichever one should die first the other would conduct a séance on the anniversary of their death for the next ten years to try to contact them.
Bess, his wife, also hired a publicist for nearly twenty years after Houdini's death. He is still making news long after he died.
Houdini created a legend and left a legacy. His name lives on.
Do you want to create a legacy? What kind of legacy would you like to leave?
