Posters as a Bookmark of Time
Posters are known for its significant value in terms of expressing one’s freedom of expression. They are commonly used to publicize, inform and entertain. The evolution of posters is attributable to grand technological advancements and people. Poster use started in Europe and has continued to gain wide popularity in every part of the world as time goes by.
The value of posters in the society of today is beyond words. They are likened to a lens where you can have a vivid picture of the cultural practices, political trends, and historical events of the society. They depict the way of life of people, from yesterday, today and tomorrow. As a matter of fact, they’ve been around for about 2,000 years. The main reason behind the creation of posters is to win over the votes of the Romans and advertise theatrical plays. And for centuries posters have evolved in terms of methods, designs, printing process, customs, and subjects.
Many things have changed in the society but the value of posters still live on. They have survived the hands of time because of their significant merits to the government, artists, historians, scholars, logicians, and the general populace. In essence, posters can bridge the gap among people; but they also have the tendency to divide people. In the article entitled: “The Value of Posters” written by Robert E. Bear, he described the posters as “barometers of social, economical, political and cultural events and inter-relations, as well as mirrors of intellectual and practical activities.” This clearly explains their potential to influence the minds of the people.
By means of posters you can get an idea about people’s way of life. Basically you can tell the difference by looking at their styles. Different periods vary in styles being used. Here are some of the poster styles that have made an impact throughout the centuries:
1. Art Noveau – is the addition of decorative appeal to linear design and organic patterns. It speaks of the modern social developments, latest technologies and innovative illustrations of the spirit. Art Noveau has different names. In France it was called Le Style Moderne, in Germany it was known as Jugendstil, while it was called Stile Liberty in Italy, Modernista in Spain, and Secession in Austria.
2. Symbolism – its objective is to tell a story in a picture. The images used contain meanings with it; and most of them were concerned about sacred or revered figures to the profane.
3. Illustrator – posters serve as a propaganda tool to rouse the populous. It is known for simple, clear posters which sent one concise message. This is the main style used in America.
4. Dadaism – is at its peak during the World War I. This style was founded on a nihilistic doctrine which depicted the world as an anarchic place with no real meaning or value. Basically, Dadaism is derived from the French word “dada” which means “hobby-horse”.
At present, posters serve as the ultimate medium that most businesses use to make a name in the industry. And as technology continues to evolve so are the posters; yet the main objective why they are created remains unchanged. Indeed, posters have become a significant bookmark of time.
