The Amber Alert Ticker
By Nick Roy, MBA, MAHRM Owner and Editor, HR Horizons
The Amber Alert is an electronic notification system notifying the general public about missing children who are presumed to be in danger. Messages are transmitted electronically using the traffic condition signs on major highways and by email.
The Amber Alert was named after Amber Hagerman, a nine year old girl who disappeared and was subsequently found dead. In January of 1996, Amber was riding her bicycle when she was pulled off of her bike and into a pick up truck. A neighbor heard her screams and called police where she gave a description of the suspects vehicle, but not much else. Four days later, she was found where her throat had been cut.
A coordinated effort ensued between local broadcasters and the police in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The goal was to develop an early warning system for missing children.
There are three criteria for an Amber Alert to be issued: 1. The child must have been clearly abducted. 2. The circumstances around the abduction leads law enforcement to believe that the child's life is in eminent danger. 3. Descriptive information about the child, suspect, and the suspect's vehicle must be given.
For example, in the case of Taylor Behl, the missing 17 year old college student, no Amber Alert was issued since there is no way to determine if this is an actual abduction. She is just classified as missing.
