Internet Trends and Statistics
Statistics and Trend predictions are always interesting, and much depends on who, where, why, what and how the information is collected. And that information can change at great speed when it relates to internet development and usage. There are many sources of data on the internet, some free and many at a price. For the purpose of this article, five areas of interest have been selected to give you a ‘flavour’ of the type of information available:
Worldwide Net Traffic to Rise
Nielson Net Ratings latest study indicates that 580 million people had internet access at February 2003, with the greatest increase being Spain with a 22% rise in the percentage of the population online. The largest at-home internet populations in Europe are Germany (53.6 million), the UK (29 million) and Italy (22.7 million).
At March 2003, IDC predicts that the volume of internet traffic generated by end users worldwide will nearly double annually over the next five years. IDC research links broadband adoption as the main driver in internet traffic, and that by 2007, estimates that consumers will account for 60 percent of all the traffic generated, versus roughly 40 percent for business users.
UK Online Shoppers
At November 2002 according to Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG), massive consumer demand from Britain's 14.3 million online shoppers flooded e-retailers with £860.5 million pounds worth of orders during October alone.
Ecommerce Ranking
Top Technology Market Trends rank ecommerce at number 9 worldwide at March 2003, with a spending value of 14.8 billion dollars. The ranking is based on market growth potential in billions plus buzz index. Although ranked at 9, it has the highest value of the top ten trends.
According to the CBI, within the next 10 years, online commerce could overtake high street sales. By 2005, Internet transactions will account for 50% of the credit card market. (Source Killen & Associates)
Email Spending
Jupiter Research have produced an E-mail spending growth exponential from 2001 through to 2007, which shows customer acquisition, retention, and sponsorship valued at £1.4 billion in 2002 rising to £8.3 billion in 2007. It is reported by eMarketer, that well executed email marketing permission campaigns can have a positive impact on consumers’ attitudes towards companies. This is according to a recent survey from Quris, where 67% of US consumers said they liked companies who, in their opinion, did a good job with permission email marketing. Around 58% said they opened those company’s emails, while 53% said that such emails affected their personal buying decisions.
Spending ratios – In-House v Outsource
AMR Research 2001 provides spending ratios comparing in-house applications and outsourced services for internet businesses. For such as list purchase/rental, sending emails, and third party creative services, outsourcing has the greatest spend; for content management, campaign management, database management, analytics and other services, outsourcing is almost equal to in-house applications, and the only service with a greater spend in-house, is for hardware. These trends show that more online businesses are recognizing the time and money saving benefits of outsourcing to internet consultants offering specialist web development services, leaving themselves free to focus on business matters.
