What is Your Personal Criteria For Ebusiness
Identify your personal criteria before you consider your ideal internet business - then create your business plan around that criteria when starting up your own business. That way, you stay focused and don't lose sight of the lifestyle you would be comfortable with, or desire. Your personal criteria should identify what you really want to do that you can be passionate about, and what you are prepared to do to achieve your desire.
Your Lifestyle is the Most Important Factor
Your first priority when starting up your own business should be to identify what you want from life - besides money. Having loads in the bank will mean nothing if you work 20 hours a day, 7 days a week, and never get the chance to enjoy the fruits of your labour. After all, money is only a commodity to exchange for what you want from life! Being honest with yourself right at the start will help you avoid setting up a business that doesn't suit you.
Your Health Matters
You might be willing to work very long hours to reach your goal, but will your health suffer due to stress, lack of regular meals, exercise, and relaxation sessions? Getting a life balance between work and play will help you sustain the enthusiasm and energy for your business, and keep your feet on the ground.
Your Friends and Family Matter
How will your friends and family fit into your business life? Will they understand what you are doing? Will they support you? Will you have time for them? How will they influence you? Will they inspire you? Consider what sacrifices might you need to make, then consider the impact on others (and yourself) and decide if you can live with the possible outcomes.
Do you Want Business 'Portability' ?
If you get 'itchy feet' and like to travel or move around, and it is an important lifestyle factor, add it to your personal criteria list. Perhaps you dream of living in a special place? Maybe you like to sell up and move house every few years? Perhaps you would like to be able to go on holiday and still control your business? One of the biggest advantages of an internet business is the 'portability' especially if you use virtual servers and keep everything web-based.
Do you prefer to Go out to Work rather than Work at Home?
There are 'pros' and 'cons' for going out to work and working at home. You need to consider what is best for you and your personal circumstances. A simple 'pros' and 'cons' list will give you an overview, or you could go further and complete a 'SWOT' analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats). With this process, you take the weaknesses and see if you can turn them into strengths, and take the threats and see if you can turn them into opportunities. This takes longer, but provides a positive approach to many issues.
Are you a "People Person"? If you prefer to be amongst people, go out for lunch and work a standard working week, then perhaps an office environment would suit you best. You can operate an internet business during 'normal' working hours, but this does not take full advantage of the freedom that could be enjoyed, and turns the internet business into a 'job'. This is also a very expensive way to operate an ebusiness, with high premises overheads, staff issues, more administration, and so on. And those costs need to be passed on to your potential customers.
Are you Comfortable Working Alone? Working from home can be lonely, or very frustrating in a household with lots going on. You might find it difficult if there are constant interruptions or noise; or you might find yourself isolated with no-one to talk to; or someone might object if you are inspired and decided to work in the middle of the night! It can also be an ideal situation giving you the freedom to work whenever you want, take time out whenever you want, and have only your close environment to think about. When you identify your personal criteria, think about how you can get your work balance right, to avoid becoming a recluse, or struggling to get some work done.
Enjoying your Work is Very Important
Many millions of people don't enjoy their work, and simply continue to earn a living, because they don't know how, or are afraid to risk changing the way things are - for a whole variety of reasons. If you can identify a business that is related to what you enjoy most in life, then you are half way to success in that business. You may be one of the millions of people who have lifetime experiences, specialist knowledge, or particular hobbies that they could tap into to create an internet business, with a product that no-one else has thought of. There are endless possibilities for niche and sub-niche products just waiting for someone to develop them!
Set your Goals to Achieve a Desired Lifestyle
Setting personal goals is especially important if you want to operate your own business, as this will impact on every other area of your life. This means doing some soul searching about what is important to you. Think of this as an opportunity to reflect on your life and where you want it to go.
Reach for the stars - but accept that if you reach the sky instead you will do very well. Set your goals high with a Plan A (this might be your long-term goal), but have a Plan B (medium term goal) and even a Plan C (short term goal) that would be acceptable to you. Achieving your short term goal will reward you with a sense of accomplishment and give you the confidence and motivation to develop your business further. On the way, you will have gained the background and knowledge to know how to take your business up to Plan B then onto Plan A. Take things step-by-step to build your business, keeping the ultimate goal in mind.
