Myrrh and Health
Myrrh, also called guggulipid, is the extract of the gum resin of the Commiphora mukul trees native to India, Africa, and Arabia.
The nutrient has been used for centuries; in ancient Rome, it was used during funerals to cover the smell of burning corpses. At that time, myrrh was worth much more than frankincense, and was one of the gifts from the Magi to the Christ Child. And after Jesus’ crucifixion, that same myrrh was used to anoint his body for burial.
Mmyrrh is currently used as an ingredient in incense, perfumes, toothpastes, lotions, and other modern toiletries. The darkness, clarity, and stickiness of the resin oil all contribute to the myrrh’s quality.
Myrrh’s guggulsterones, which may have antioxidant effects on lipids, can slow down the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver, and may also stimulate the thyroid.
More Health Effects of Myrrh
Myrrh may act as an anti-inflammatory and, lower lipoproteins and C-reactive proteins. The nutrient might also protect against drug-induced myocardial necrosis, and, because Guggulipid reduces the secretion of sebum, and slows the metabolism of triglycerides that have been known to cause it, may help alleviate acne.
Myrrh is also used to treat arthritis, lower cholesterol levels treat or prevent atherosclerosis and skin diseases and may be an aid to weight loss.
Myrrh: Things to Watch For
While myrrh may be toxic in higher doses, and should not be used during pregnancy, it has, when taken in normal doses, no known side effects.
