Merck Pushes For Mandatory Vaccine
Drug mogul Merck is funding campaigns to push for a new mandatory vaccine for girl’s ages 11 to 12 in order to protect against sexually transmitted diseases including HPV.
According to an article on Forbes.com, “Merck makes the vaccine, called Gardasil, which guards against strains of HPV that cause most cases of cervical cancer. Currently, at least 18 states are debating whether to make the vaccine mandatory for schoolgirls.”
The drug maker has reportedly given money to a female advocacy group called Women in Government, whose members comprise of many female state legislators throughout the government. Many of the states bill that Merck is hoping to get approved have already been submitted by some of the members of this group.
The Forbes.com article also states, “Some parents'-rights and conservative groups charge that Merck is engaging in underhanded lobbying. These groups say making the vaccine mandatory would encourage premarital sex and interfere with how parents raise their children.”
Gardasil was approved in 2006 by the FDA to fight against sexually transmitted diseases. Although Gardasil is a very affective way to fight against the spread of sexually transmitted disease, I can’t help but see the money signs in the eyes of Merck beneficiaries.
