Zofran Generic Approved
According to HealthDay News, GlaxoSmithKline's drug Zofran (ondansetron) was approved by the FDA for generic production. Zofran is used to prevent nausea and vomiting associated with surgery and chemotherapy.
Zofran was the 20th best selling drug in the United States in 2006, recording sales of more than 839 million dollars. GlaxoSmithKline’s other products include treatments for asthma, HIV/AIDS, malaria, depression, migraine, diabetes, heart failure, digestive conditions and cancer. GlaxoSmithKline also produces other consumer products such as Panadol, Aquafresh, and Lucozade.
HealthDay states, “License to produce generic versions was granted to three companies: Dr. Reddy Laboratories of Bridgewater, N.J.; Kali Laboratories of Somerset, N.J.; and Roxane Laboratories of Columbus, Ohio.
Generics fill around 50% of all prescriptions around the world. Despite the common misconception that generics are less affective or of lesser quality, they are the exact equivalent of their brand name counterpart. The FDA states, they are equivalent to the brand name medications in dosage, strength, route of administration, quality, performance, and intended use, the agency added.
