What are the most common symptoms of scabies?
Scabies is an infection of the skin that used to very very common in the past, and it can still be encountered many times nowadays, especially in rural environments or in large institutions such as the army. Scabies can quickly and easily spread from one person to another by a simple skin to skin contact, by wearing the clothes that were previously worn by someone with scabies, or by sleeping in the same bed where that person has slept. The parasites that cause scabies move very slowly and they can't jump, so you can't get them by sitting near a scabies patient.
Very little mites are responsible for causing scabies. These mites are attracted to the heat and smell of the human body. They have an incubation period of a few weeks, so the symptoms only appear some time after you have been infected. But scabies is contagious in these first incubation weeks too, so you can have it and give it to others without knowing about it.
After the incubation period passes the mites begin to burrow deep in the skin, and the females will lay eggs in the small tunnels that they create. In some cases the tunnels that they dig can be discovered if you look really careful.
The first symptoms that appear are irritation and itching in the areas where the scabies developed. Usually these areas are the hands and the feet first, and if it's left untreated the mites can spread in other places too. In a few weeks you can discover that you have thousands of mites on your skin if you don't eliminate them quickly.
The red itchy rash that develops when you have scabies can look like threads or like dots, depending on the patient. The scabies mites prefer to live between the fingers and around the wrists, so that's where the signs will appear first. In the beginning the itching caused by scabies is lighter, but in two weeks it will be unbearable, and the patient won't even be able to sleep during the night time because of the itching.
If you suspect that you have scabies, or you find out that a close friend or family member has it, consult a doctor as soon as you can in order to prevent the mites from laying more eggs. If you find out that you do have scabies, you need to start a simple treatment that has the purpose of killing all the mites from your body and their eggs too. You'll need to apply some creams or ointments on your skin for some time until the mites die, but you'll still experience irritation and rash symptoms until their dead bodies disappear from the body too.
