Know the Basics of Breast Enlargement
Technically, breast enlargement is referred to as mammoplasty, which aims to reconstruct the
breasts to address the concerns of the patient.
There are a number of reasons why women undergo this process:
First, to help enhance the shape of a woman’s body by modifying the shape, size and volume.
Second, to correct an abnormality created after pregnancy,
Third, to help balance the size of the breasts in case of any abnormality.
Lastly, to address problems relating to personal reasons such as the patient feels that her breasts
are too small.
This surgical process is done through inserting breast implants at the back of each breast or directly
under the tissue of the breasts through creating pockets. There are various types of breast implants
including:
Silicone-gel implants
- Single lumen is a pre-filled with silicone gel that has fixed volume.
- Double lumen inflatable implant is basically a silicone implant with a pre-filled inner lumen while the
outer lumen can be filled during operation.
- Double lumen inflatable implant is of two kinds: one with the outer lumen pre-filled with silicone-gel
and the inner lumen has a valve that allows saline filling during operation, and allows for correction or
adjustment postoperatively. And the other is an implant with the outer lumen pre-filled with silicone
while the inner lumen can be filled for correction during surgery.
Saline-filled implants
- Pre-filled saline implants - Single lumen implant with a valve - Single lumen adjustable implant
All saline-filled implants can come in either textured or smooth form. Smooth implants are known to
have more natural look and are safe from rupture. Textured implants, on the other hand, stay firmer in
place and are known to be less susceptible to complications.
Sites of incision
There are four basic sites for incisions. These are the following:
- Through the armpits - Lower crease of each breast - Along the areola - Via the belly button
Your preference of incision site must be thoroughly discussed with your physician since most have
their own preferred techniques.
Implant placement
- Sub-glandular is characterized by implant insertion over the breast muscle. This type can facilitate
faster recovery and easier completion of the process.
- Sub-muscular insertion, on the other hand, is characterized by placing the implant under the breast
muscle. This can either be partial or complete.
Complications
One main concern with breast enlargement is the complication. The most common of which is the
capsular contracture. This occurs because a layer of tissue forms around the implants. This then can
cause irritation since the breasts will become harder. Other complications include:
- Rupture or implant bleeding - Loss of sensation on the nipples - Rippling - Calcium deposits
Candidates for Breast Enlargement
This is an extensive surgery which requires physical and psychological readiness. Most physicians
would not allow women aged 18 and below. But this does not negate the fact that this surgical
procedure is performed below the prescribed age.
Patients are also advised not to be more-than-hopeful with the results. This frame of mind might
cause the failure of the procedure since patients often feel dissatisfied afterwards.
Cost
Breast enlargement costs are highly variable. The average of which ranges from ,000 to ,000.
But this rate often goes higher since there are other expenses charged and due to the fact that most
insurance would not cover a cosmetic surgery like this.
