A Sweetener that Combats Sinus Problem
No, you did not read the title wrong. It is true. An all natural sweetener used in many medicines today that has been proven to help solve problems such as a sinus infection or ear infection. What is this magic substance? Xylitol. Xylitol is a nutritional supplement that looks and taste just like sugar. It is naturally occurring and only differs in its chemical structure. Most sugar alcohols contain 6 carbon atoms, but xylitol has 5 carbon atoms. It is found in many vegetables and fruits and even is produced in the human body in small amounts. You may recognize its name on many popular chewing gum wrappers as a sugar substitute. This natural sweetener actually has many positive medical aspects. How does it work? Because of the difference of structure between xylitol and sugar, xylitol is able to kill the bacteria that cause sinus problems, therefore preventing an ear infection and other sinus problems. Bacteria consume it, thinking it is regular sugar. However, because of it has only 5 carbon atoms compared to sugar which has 6, the bacteria that consume it are not able to metabolize it. The bacteria therefore die and are flushed away. Xylitol is used in a saline nasal spray which literally flushes out the bacteria that would normally cause such problems. By using the nasal spray, one can prevent the medical condition known as otitis media, which causes inflammation of the middle ear. You might ask how a nasal spray will prevent ear infections and otitis media. How it works is it flushes and cleans the tender tissue that connects the nose to the ear where ear infections can occur. If a chronic or severe condition occurs, some people have had sinus surgery done. This was not the safest alternative in the past, but it has improved and can be very effective. However, by using nasal spray containing xylitol, the symptoms of a sinus problem can be decreased dramatically. Not only can xylitol be used for sinus and ear infections, but it is used in cavity prevention, diabetic candy, low carb candy, health snacks, and to combat dental caries and allergy problems among many other things. Remember when the old commercials used to tell us to chew a piece of gum after every meal? Well, that is because it was gum containing xylitol, which not only kills the bacteria that cause sinus and ear infections but it also kills the bacteria that cause tooth decay, cavity problems, dental caries and gum disease. There you have it. Now you know of the magic substance of xylitol and its many applications in the medical world. About the Author: Jason Luke is a Client Account Specialist for 10X Marketing.
