Is Plan B Birth Control Going to Become Plan A?
Today the new over-the-counter version of the morning after pill has hit pharmacies shelves nationwide. “Planned Parenthood celebrated Wednesday with a free giveaway of the emergency contraceptive, while critics insisted that Plan B's accessibility will soon be a cause for regret” the Washington Post reports.
Plan B which is manufactured by Bar Pharmaceutical is a higher dose of the same drug found in many birth control pills. The pill lowers the risk of pregnancy by 89 percent if taken within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. Although it is available over the counter to girls 18 and older, a prescription is still required for those 17 and below.
Since being approved for over-the-counter sales in August, there has been much debate over Plan B.
Supporters argue that over the counter sale will reduce the number of pre-teen, teen, and unwanted pregnancies. They also hope that it will cut down on the number of abortions.
Results however, may have a more detrimental affect. Over-the-counter use may increase promiscuity and unprotected sex, which could very well lead to an increase of sexually transmitted diseases. Some independent pharmacies have decided not to carry Plan B and some pharmacists working for large pharmacies do not want to sell it do to moral objections. A CVS pharmacist who has qualms about selling Plan B must arrange for another employee to sell it, and the pharmacist must ensure that the customer "is served promptly and treated with respect," the company told the Washington Post.
Prices for Plan B range from 30 to 60 dollars. Plan B is now widely available at most pharmacies and drug stores. This information was provided by Premier Mexican Pharmacy.com.
